Longines Caliber L688.2 Column Wheel Chronograph Movement

Longines Caliber L688.2 Column Wheel Chronograph MovementNew forms of movements come about slowly and some are justified but others are not. I keep bearing witness to the column wheel chronograph with an aire of hesitation. Sure, the chronographs of old have been played more than the Jeremy’s spoken over the years, but do some of the newcomers that hold the coveted Castle Wheel trump the old styles of yesteryear? Tough to say. The column wheel is in the biggie names and has a great reputation. Likewise, the older style lever-action really has fewer potential problems and is relatively easier to fix. Both have been around some time and have pros and cons.

The question is: can a new style column ask $1,000-$1,500 more for their trouble in construction? The no BS answer: No. It’s more about marketing and less about function. We like both styles of chronographs but you won’t get that extra dough from us. One blog’s opinion, of course.

The pics shown are of the new Longines chronograph now in stores. Caliber L.688.2. Similar goods are found in Hamilton, Victorinox, and Tag Heuer – all for a $1,000 USD less sans column wheel. Your call…
